One of the most common problems male and female are facing today is hair loss, be it thinning up or going bald. According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery statistics, approximately 35 million men and 21 million women are affected by hair loss in the USA only.

Hair transplant can be considered a lifetime solution for this problem, it can help bringing back what looks like a full head of hair. Here is an overview on hair transplant and what to expect of it.

Hair transplant : What to expect!

  • What is hair transplant?

Hair transplant is a surgical procedure that is performed in a doctor's office. It helps growing back the hair in a thin or bald area by filling it with hair follicles from a donor area. Hair transplants have been done since the 1950s, but techniques have changed a lot in recent years. Hair transplant procedure uses different techniques which are decided on depending on each patient’s needs and case.

  • Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) method is the ideal hair transplant method to cover large areas suffering hair loss. Blades made from sapphire ensure that incisions made on the scalp are as minute as possible and are less likely to scab afterwards. Sapphire FUE technique is applied to achieve natural-looking results by collecting hair follicles from the donor area using a micro-motor technology.

Direct hair implantation (DHI)

Direct hair implantation (DHI) is a modification of the FUE technique. It follows a similar procedure; the surgeon removes hair follicles from the donor area and implant them into the balding areas.  HDI is a painless procedure. No scars, No stitches and 100% natural results.

Who can have a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is suitable for people with permanent baldness or severe hair loss. After a diagnosis of the state of the hair loss type and of the donor area, the doctor decides on which technique to use to transplant the hair, be it follicular unit extraction (FUE), Direct hair implantation (DHI) or others.

Expectations and Recovery

After the surgery, the scalp may be very tender, there may be some pain, so it’s inevitable to take pain medications, antibiotic, or an anti-inflammatory drug for several days.

On average, a hair transplantation surgery may take about 8 hours to complete.  Results take between 6 to 18 months to fully show. Some surgeons prescribe the hair-growing drug and other special hair care shampoo to improve hair growth after transplantation.

Risks of Hair transplant

Like all other surgeries, hair transplantation has some risks such as bleeding, infection, scarring and (or) unnatural-looking new hair growth. Most of these side effects are not permanent, however it’s better to talk to your doctor about these risks and how much improvement you’re likely to get from the hair transplant surgery.

If hair loss progresses even after hair transplant surgery, an "unnatural" and "patchy" look may result, especially if the newly transplanted hair is next to patches of hair that continue to thin out. In this case, additional surgery may be required.
