Dental crowns as well as dental implants are common dental devices used in different dental treatment procedures that aim to restore one's smile. This blog article explains what dental crowns and dental implants are, as well as when and why they are used.

Dental crown: what is it? When and why is it used?

Dental crowns are prosthetic caps that help restoring the shape, the size, the functioning and the aesthetic appearance of a damaged, misshaped, broken, chipped, discolored, or decayed tooth that cant be restored with simple procedures such as filling.

Dental crowns can be made of different materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials. The choice of which material to use for the teeth restoration depends on the location of the tooth, the patient's preference for this or that material, and the dentist's recommendation. Generally, porcelain and ceramic crowns are used for front teeth since they are very aesthetically pleasing; whereas metal crowns are used for  teeth in the back since they are durable and strong.

Generally, getting a dental crown is a short-term process that requires two visits to the dentist office. The first visit is for the preparation of the damaged tooth. Preparation includes removing decay, filling holes and shaping the teeth to make it possible for the crown to cover it. After that, impressions of the tooth will be taken and sent to the laboratory in order to customize the crown. The second visit is meant for the placement of the crown on top of the teeth.  During the time between the two visits, the patient can wear a temporary crown to cover the shark teeth and to make it convenient for him to eat and appear in public.

Dental implant: what is it? When and why is it used?

Dental implants are  metallic prosthetic structures that help restoring a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth. Dental implants are made of titanium, which is a biocompatible material that can fuse with the bone over time. They  are placed surgically  into the jawbone to create a stable foundation for the replacement teeth or bridge.

Generally, getting a dental implant is a lengthy process that involves several steps. The first step requires the dentist to place the implant into the jawbone through a surgery. After that, the patient must wait for a couple of months for the implant to fuse and integrate the jawbone before returning to the dentist who will examine him, and proceed with the next steps if the osseointegration is a success. The next step consists of attaching an abutment to the implant, which will serve as the foundation for the replacement tooth or bridge. In the final step, a crown or a bridge will be fixed on the top of the abutment to complete the restoration.

Dental crowns or dental implants?

As explained above, The main difference between dental crowns and dental implants resides in their use. Crowns are used to restore damaged or weakened teeth, and they are placed over existing teeth to strengthen and protect them; whereas, implants are used to replace missing teeth, and they are surgically placed into the jawbone.

The amount of time to get the procedure done is another key difference between crowns and implants. Getting a dental crown is a short-term process that can be completed within a week or so. Getting a dental implant is a long-term process that can take several months and multiple visits to the dentist.

The cost of each procedure is also a key difference between crowns and implants. Dental implants are generally much more expensive than dental crowns.

As a patient, one can decide to have crowns treatment or implant treatment. A clinical diagnosis by a dentist in a clinic or a dental office is necessary to determine the best procedure to use.
